When people think of hospice care, they often think of comfort, dignity, and compassion. But behind that care stand people who quietly give their time, resources, and hearts to make it possible. For Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Dave and Janey Pearce have long been two of those people.
In 2024, the Cape Fear chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals recognized Dave and Janey as Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year. This well-deserved honor was given to a couple who had already given so much to LifeCare and many other nonprofits throughout Brunswick County.
Dave first became involved with Lower Cape Fear LifeCare over a decade ago. He began as a volunteer, visiting patients who needed a friendly face and a good conversation. As Dave puts it, “Patients understand their condition and want to talk about the same things they have always been interested in, whether sports, family, church, or even politics. Just be yourself and be their friend.”
Over time, Dave’s involvement grew. He served on the LifeCare Board of Directors and became a strong advocate for hospice care in the community. Dave and Janey have been generous donors, helping ensure that anyone who needs hospice care can receive it, regardless of their ability to pay.
Their impact is especially felt at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia, which continues to be a cornerstone for end-of-life care in the region. Since opening its doors in 2012, the facility has offered patients and families warmth, privacy, and peace. Volunteers and donors like Dave have made that possible.
Today, Dave continues to volunteer, bringing comfort and companionship to patients. His ongoing service is a steady reminder of volunteers’ important role in hospice care.
Brunswick County is known for its small-town charm, coastal beauty, and close-knit community. Whether people spend a morning fishing, playing golf, or walking the beaches, there is a rhythm of life here that values relationships. That same spirit runs through the halls of the SECU Hospice House and in the homes where LifeCare staff and volunteers visit patients.
Dave once wrote, “Consider becoming a hospice volunteer. It’s a flexible supplement to a busy schedule of golf, boating, and fishing. The people I have served have enriched my life.”
We remain grateful to Dave and Janey Pearce for their years of service, leadership, and generosity. Their dedication to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare reflects the very heart of our mission: to care for those we serve and to support the families who love them. Brunswick County is a better place because of people like Dave and Janey.
