In 2014, Lower Cape Fear LifeCare and Mercy Hospice merged.

Mercy Care Hospice was organized by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, and was headed by Sister Connie Fahey and Dr. Charles Sasser forty years ago. Dr. Sasser, already interested in hospice, had travelled to England to learn from Dame Cicely Saunders, the modern-day founder of hospice.

Mercy Care Hospice was the first hospice to open in the Horry County region in 1980. It started as a nonprofit hospice to ensure care was available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

Like Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Mercy Care understood that children affected by the loss of someone special in their lives processed grief differently than adults. Both adopted a specific program to provide counseling to children.

We are a Level 5 Partner through the We Honor Veterans program.

What does this mean?

It means we have gone above and beyond for those who have sacrificed and given so much for our country and achieved the highest rank in the program.

It also means we’ve had to meet a stringent set of criteria to earn this recognition. We are constantly looking for better ways in which we can serve veterans. In fact, when our admission teams meet with veterans, we complete a military history checklist. This will help us determine what services would provide the greatest benefits.
