Free Events on Understanding Dementia Offered in Brunswick County

Wilmington, NC – Lower Cape Fear LifeCare is hosting Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at two locations in Brunswick County. A morning workshop from 9:30-11 a.m. will be hosted at Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation, 795 Ocean Hwy in Supply, and from 2-3:30 p.m., in rooms 208-209, at Brunswick Community College’s Leland Center at 2045 Enterprise Dr. NE in Leland. This is a free event featuring speaker Melanie Bunn, RN, of Bunn Consulting.

Melanie Bunn is a Dementia Training Specialist for Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, Consulting Associate at the Duke University School of Nursing, and Trainer of Positive Approach to Care. Ms. Bunn also leads her consulting company, Bunn Consulting. Ms. Bunn received her undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, her master’s degree in Family Health Nursing from Clemson University and a Post-Master’s Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Duke University.

Participants will learn how to identify normal signs of memory loss due to aging and abnormal signs that may indicate a dementia-related illness. They will also learn how dementia-related illnesses affect the brain and progress, and what can be done to improve quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related illness and their caregivers.
