LCFL Achieves Level Four of National Program to Provide Veteran-Centric Care

OCT. 17, 2024

Wilmington, NC – Lower Cape Fear LifeCare is proud to announce that its South Carolina operation is now a Level 4 Partner with We Honor Veterans (WHV), a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. We Honor Veterans was launched in 2010 by NHPCO in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs to address the growing need for veteran-centered end-of-life care, especially as veterans continue to age and require access to high-quality, specialized hospice and palliative care.

As a Level 4 Partner, Lower Cape Fear LifeCare participated in numerous activities to improve its capacity to provide veteran-centric care at the end of life. This included integrating veteran-specific staff education, collaborating with community organizations, ensuring best-practice standards for identifying and serving veterans in hospice care, and implementing procedures for continuously reviewing and improving veteran-centered care.

“Lower Cape Fear LifeCare is proud to have achieved the rank of Level 4 in the We Honor Veterans program,” Gwen Whitley, president and CEO, said. “Our South Carolina team has worked hard to achieve this designation within the program, demonstrating our deep commitment to area veterans.”

Lower Cape Fear LifeCare is one of the longest operating and one of the only nonprofit hospice and palliative care providers in the Myrtle Beach area. No one is ever denied the care and support they need based on their ability to pay.

“While we are pleased that we have received this level of recognition, we also understand that this is great news for veterans in the Myrtle Beach area,” Whitley continued. “Living with a life-limiting or serious illness is challenging enough. It should be comforting for veterans to know that they have a partner in care who understands and is committed to meeting their unique needs at this time in their lives.”
